IT Network design and Implementation Project
AMJ assisted a medical diagnostic company who specialise in developing medical devices that enable rapid and reliable blood tests for thyroid. The project improved the security, stability and efficiency of their IT infrastructure.
The Kent based organisation was formed in 2005 and has experienced rapid growth to reach the point of around 50 employees. As the organisation has evolved their IT infrastructure has limited their productivity and caused issues by not being able to easily and efficiently store the large amounts of data that they created.
The organisation contracted AMJ to audit the current setup and then implement changes that would ensure the company’s’ IT setup fitted their requirements and was scalable to cope with future growth.
IT Network Technical Setup
The company had two servers and they ran most of their operations through one server whilst the other was used mainly for storage. This main server ran an essential compliance monitoring appliance amongst a number of other tasks.
The network included in excess of 100 machines throughout the company which were split between laboratory and office based work. The company had a basic manual archiving solution in place which was using up large amounts of time.
Mobile connectivity was limited with webmail not fully supported and not up to the latest standards.
Issues
AMJ diagnosed the following issues with their setup-
- There were data archiving issues as the amount of data produced far outweighed their capacity to easily deal with it. This meant storing the data was time consuming and once stored it was not easily retrievable.
- The main server had limitations in its ability to integrate with modern devices and software.
- The company was limited in its ability to upgrade its applications including its essential compliance monitoring appliance.
- The servers were reaching the end of their recommended lifespan.
- There were a number of good practice issues.
- The IT infrastructure was not scalable and therefore would have encountered even more issues with further growth.
AMJ Solution
AMJ proposed and implemented a solution that involved a new server and a new data storage unit. AMJ implemented a number of changes and updates which created a solution of balancing the different operations over the different servers to create greater efficiency and stability.
The project involved-
- Spreading the operations onto different servers
- Deployment of a new mail archive solution to ensure data compliance
- Re-use of old equipment to reduce the project cost where possible
- Increasing the lab storage and ensuring it is maintainable and scalable.
- Moving servers into a dedicated server room to stop overheating risks and centralise the IT infrastructure.
- Managing the physical implementation of the IT systems.
The project took place over the Easter break to minimise the disruption whilst the changes were made.
What AMJ Delivered
AMJ delivered a solution that provided an efficient and stable method of working in order to maximise the potential benefits offered by their IT infrastructure whilst minimising the potential risks. The solution ensured that the company is able to support the growth in the amount of users and data output, without having to make frequent adaptations to their IT architecture.
The changes have increased the security of the data, increased the productivity of the staff and decreased the amount of IT support required.
More specifically-
- Employees can now manage emails through mobile devices
- Core business applications have been upgraded and are able to be accessed remotely
- There is no need for manual data archiving.
- There is automated archive solution for emails.
- The storage solution has been extended to provide extra capacity
- The solution has enabled better IT administration.
